Woman Engineer – Lifestyle: Setting Goals for 2018!

By on January 7, 2018

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a really good holiday! Hopefully we all have the mentality of “new year, new you. I sure do and I’m so excited to start this year off with a bang!

There are a lot of things happening with me this year and there is a lot of preparations for those new things.

  • I’m graduating this year! I’m almost done with my Bachelor degree, 1 more semester. All I need to do is pay my fees and make sure I don’t fail any classes.
  • I’m preparing for my graduation trip, I still don’t know where to go yet…
  • Preparing to work full time at an engineering firm and significantly increase my monthly income.
  • Making Womanengineer.com awesome!
  • Start investing

These are the 3 steps I think of when setting new goals. It has helped me through 2017 and I hope that it will help you too!

Setting Goals

But in order for all this to happen the way I want, I have set out some goals for myself. Let’s talk about setting goals.

  • Set achievable goals– Don’t aim for the stars unless you have a good record of high achievement. Whenever I set out of this world goals, I tend to give up pretty quickly.
  • Make the goals specific and measurable– Goals need to be very specific. Don’t set general goals like losing weight. An example would be to set how many you would like to lose. I want to lose 5 pounds. You also need to figure out a way to get there. How will you lose 5 lbs? Where will you exercise? Why do you want to do it? And what is your schedule/plan?
  • Write them down and track your progress– Write down your goals and put them where you will see them. I write it down on a piece of paper and thumb tack it next to my computer so I see it every time when I sit down. It haunts me but the action of crossing it out is sooooo satisfying.

Let me hear about your 2018 goals! There are so many things I can learn from you guys and then put it into my goal list too!

Pregnancy and Abortion

By on October 27, 2017

Recently a classmate has asked me for my opinion on Abortion so I figure I would talk about it here. But before I go on, I would like it to be  clear that these are my opinion. I am in no way pushing my opinions onto you. I simply want to talk about my opinions and your options if you’re expecting the unexpected.

I am anti-abortion but I am also a moderate republican. I didn’t vote in the last presidential election anyway, so I really shouldn’t reveal my political stance.

There is a song that my boyfriend sings really often called, Close To You by the Carpenters. It goes a little like this, “On the day that you were born the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true. So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue.” To me, it means that when a baby is conceived, angels specifically come to celebrate and design the baby very specifically to make at least one dream come true. The miracle of birth is so special that every baby deserves a chance to come into this world. Babies are so very precious, their innocence fills (a) heart/s with joy. Ever heard of the phrase, “the good things in life?” I think a baby is truly one of the good things in life. However, not many women my age seems to share the same opinion.

I know we all have our problems. I know your parents would not approve (that is if you had a child out of wedlock), you’re afraid of being judged, you’re afraid of the baggage, you’re afraid of the weight gain, you’re afraid of the pain, you’re afraid your husband doesn’t want a baby, you’re afraid you can’t afford it, you’re afraid of not being able to travel and live your life, you might be a single mom, you’re simply afraid. I understand all this, I too had the same fears. For a long time, I feared these things. I had pregnancy worries because I let these fears get to me. I was so afraid of having a baby. I would tell my boyfriend that abortion was an option, men don’t get a say in whether they want to keep their baby according to Hillary Clinton-equality at its greatest, people! (I could go on an on about sexual equality but this is not the time) However, I learned about so many programs that are non-profit and federally funded that provide for women through pregnancy. One of the program is Planned Parenthood. There is a weird dark cloud over Planned Parenthood (before knowing about this program, I was with the nuns outside the clinics protesting). Okay, it’s not a perfect program, there are some nurses who only gives two options at PP. Keep or Toss-someone once told me after her experience. Toss is such a disgusting word in pregnancy. But from interviews I learned that some nurses provide girls with a lot of options. So please be very careful when going into a place like this. But I beg that you would keep an open mind. Please come into PP for options and help instead of ending things. There are a lot of choices to choose from, girls! It not just about keeping or aborting! There are many couples on endless wait lists for a baby. There are housing programs for single moms, there is a program that will feed your baby till the day he turns 18 years old (food stamps.)

I like to think of pregnancy as breaking a really big bone. It hurts but it will heal! You’ll carry a cast for 9 months, people will open doors for you and help you lift things. It really isn’t a big difference. All you have to do is know your options. The thing about America is that there are passionate people with a lot of money that will do anything for good karma. As for me, I know my parents will be okay. I made a mistake and as parents they would not dare to kick their baby onto the curb at her most vulnerable stage. And if they do which I doubt, the government is always a good fall back. I’ll just have to throw away some pride.

I no long fears pregnancy because I know my options. I live in one of the most advanced countries in the world for goodness sake. Now I don’t want to give up my baby anymore if a seed is planted into me. I know that God wants it that way. If He knew that I wasn’t ready, He would not do it. I know that as soon as I held my baby in my arms, the very first time my baby holds my hand, the moment I can feel him/her kick, the moment he/she becomes a part of me. In our lives, a million things can go wrong, who the hell believes in miracles, right? But a baby is a miracle! Does it not blow your mind that one sperm and one egg and a nature’s incubator created you??? That’s a fucking miracle! Therefore, I beg that if you are in this situation, please give your baby a chance. Wouldn’t you want a chance too? People are always asking for chances but are not willing to give.

Then there is the “what if my life is threatened,” in this situation I believe that it is your choice. So at that  moment when I am threatened with life and death, I’ll flip a coin. If I live, I’ll regret things but if I die I will never see my baby. Either way, it’s bitter as hell. Toss a life for a life, biggest philosophical discussion since the beginning of time. In the case of the Zika Virus, I will keep my baby. What if he’s screaming in my womb saying, “mom give me a chance I’ll live! Just give me chance.” When he comes into the world, he might suffer but if he can live through it he’ll have 2 miracles before reaching adulthood.

This has been too long. There is just too much to talk about when it comes to this topic but I want you to take one thing away from this, YOU HAVE OPTIONS IT IS NEVER BLACK OR WHITE.

All about Facial Sunscreen

By on October 26, 2017

Hello There!

In December 2016, I received a sample bag filled with sunscreen from Sephora. I didn’t think twice about it because I could give no fuck about sunscreen a year ago. I had one brand that I used when I needed sunscreen called Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15. It was not sticky or goey and I love the smell, I had no idea there was such a thing as luxury sunscreen. But the other drug store brands Neutrogena, Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, and Banana Boat (given these are to be used on the body not face but I mean who cares). Anyway, about 1 year ago, I started reading about sun rays and was scared to death that 15 spf kind of does nothing to my skin. It was too “weak”, and it made sense because I have so many sun damage freckles on my face and I regret so badly not wearing a higher spf sunscreen! So I took out that sample bag of sunscreen and I said, I would find one that I like right?! Nah I was wrong. Although some came really close to what I wanted.

I had only 2 criteria:

  1. Must be lightweight to the touch, meaning it can’t be gooey or sticky. I have combination skin. So it gets dry especially near my mouth and forehead but oily near my t-zone and nose. Typical really.

2. Must be a physical sunscreen. -This means the active ingredients include Zinc and Titanium Oxide. I’m super prone to dark spots, it runs in my DNA. As for the percentage of these active ingredients, I could care less because honestly, I’m not THAT extra.

So below is a list of sunscreen that I tried. I have extremely sensitive eyes and skin. So if I didn’t developed a rashes to it I would wear it for a week for better experimental results.

Aveeno 15spf- Although I’ve been using this all my life, this one does not meet the physical part of my requirement. But we all know how it is, no smell, quite matte and in general wonderful.

La Roche Posay Anthelios 50. $32 This is the magical stuff. This past my test and it is now my go-to. It’s not sticky, it comes on matte and the white cast goes away after 10-15 minutes. I have never had a problem with the white cast, but if you do, you’ll have to reconsider. It also has a sunscreen smell but the way it leaves my face smelling soft makes up for it. It’s also waterproof but don’t go swimming with it, you’ll get lots of questions as to why your face is so white.

Jack Black Jack Black Sun Guard Sunscreen SPF 45 Oil-Free & Very Water Resistant, 4 fl. oz.
KORRES Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil Face Sunscreen SPF 30, 0.2 lb.

The Fluffy Tale of Steve the Squirrel: Trials of Love, Sharks…and Morgan Freeman

Trials of Love: Sharks and Batman

Life is unpredictable. The slightest events in life have the power to change everything. There was a boy named Paul Star. Paul grew up in the suburbs with strict parents. His parents always emphasized that getting rich was the key to happiness. His parents instilled in him that through a good education he will eventually become rich. Even at a young age every day after school Paul was studying, reading, and gaining knowledge to become successful. He would read stories and biographies of great visionaries and business men like Steve Jobs. He loved to watch documentaries and movies too but his parents wouldn’t allow it since it was a “Time Waster”. At school Paul didn’t associate with the other kids much. He was a textbook geek; lanky, smart, and he even wore glasses.

Even though he got good grades and was determined to get rich he always felt out of place. He didn’t have any real hobbies. His parents were so engulfed in trying to get their son rich they didn’t pay attention to his interest. He felt like a chair in a swimming pool, sometimes wondering why he was blindly following his parent’s ideals. It wasn’t until college where we would find himself.

When Paul left for college he didn’t know what to do. It reminded him of his first time going to church, walking in, not knowing what to expect. It was unknown to him. He didn’t make very many friends because he has always been anti-social.

One day riding his bike to class everything would change. Paul was late to class and he rode reckless through campus. Halfway to his class a squirrel jumped out of a bush and reacting fast, Paul swerved into a tree avoiding the squirrel. He fell off his bike and ended up in the dirt. Paul was getting up when a girl walked over to help him. That’s when he met Sarah. Sarah was the polar opposite of Paul. She was brought up in a less strict household. With no rules she loved to adventure and have a good time. When Sarah helped Paul get up from his accident they instantly clicked. Paul asked Sarah if she wanted to grab a cup of coffee and they did.

The thing Paul liked best about Sarah was she opened a whole new world for him. Pretty soon they were traveling and just enjoying life. They would ride bikes together through the town just enjoying each other’s company. Paul being sheltered by his parents never got to experience this. It was ever since that first cup of coffee with Sarah that Paul felt like time was moving so fast. He was enjoying life. He felt like a kid playing in a puddle having so much fun not giving any cares to the world.

Eventually Paul knew that getting rich wasn’t the happiness he needed or even wanted. He found his passion by thinking of the one hobby he liked to do growing up as a kid, plays. Little did Paul know that plays were Sarah’s favorite also and she falls deeper in love with him. He seized this opportunity and asks her to marry him. They end up getting married and do not know what is to become of their lives but as long as they’re together they know everything will be okay. They started their own movie theater known as Stars. A few months after marriage, they find out that a big storm is on the way.

At this point they have no clue what they will do,
they came up with a solution only second before taking action. They run for
their indestructible movie bunker, Star. They grab only a sweater and rush for
safety. When they get there it seems it is packed full of others trying to
survive. They don’t know if there will even be room. The girl remembers about

the local church so they quickly scram for the church. When  they get
there, to their surprise, there is a large pool like area in the entrance full
of man eating metal sharks with killer lasers on their heads. The squirrel goes
into a trance state and uses his vast amount of knowledge to think up of a way
to get across the pool area. Little did the squirrel know, his 20 years of
parkour would finally pay off. Paul quickly kicked the first shark in the nose
back flipping onto another shark. He grabbed hold of the head of the shark and
used the laser to decimate the pack of sharks.

Paul wondered where the sharks came from since
they were in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska. When Paul looked up he got his
answer. There was a tornado full of sharks or more commonly known by scientists
as a shark-nado. Soon, the streets were being flooded with water from the
ocean. Paul saw little kids playing in the water not knowing a shark-nado was
taking place. He rushed into the church and quickly paid his tribute to God. He
pulled out his Gat and opened fire. Paul quickly got a triple kill. He unlocked
the achievement by killing two sharks with one bullet. Paul ran out of bullets
and three more sharks came in and cornered him. The sharks slowly crept up on Paul and all looked lost. Paul knew what he had to do. Paul force choked one of the sharks and threw him into another one. Paul quickly pulled out his light saber and deflected the incoming laser directly shooting the third shark in the head. Sarah exclaimed “I didn’t know you were jedi master!” Paul quickly said “I have no time to explain get in the batmobile”. Paul knew the only safe place in all of town was the Batcave. When Paul and Sarah arrived at the Batcave they realized that the shark-nado would destroy humanity as they know it. The only solution was to wait it out. Paul made them both a cup of coffee, sat down, took off their watches, and prepared to wait out the storm. After that the Batcave came crumbling down and Paul knew there was only one escape pod. So he had to sacrifice himself  in order to save the love of his life, Sarah. As our story winds down to the end, one must remember that “The wind is rising! We must try to live!” Even when we lose our most loved one we must continue to live. In Paul and Sarah’s case,  anything can happen in life. Maybe destinies are real, maybe they aren’t. But the one thing for sure is if that squirrel didn’t make Paul fall off his bike into a tree he might of never meet Sarah and followed his dreams.

Special thanks to Jesus Velazquez for his Morgan Freeman title.

Your Future Husband/Wife

By on September 1, 2017

Recently, I had a conversation with my girlfriend about how we would want our future husbands to be. Unlike me, she is quite experienced with relationships. We came to a conversation that goes something like this, “would you want a husband that does everything or a husband that allows you to learn on your own.” Basically, we were discussing whether we wanted to be dependent or independent in our marriages. My girlfriend is a middle child so she is super independent, so I asked her if she likes one that is independent of her, one that she depends on, or one that allows her to be an independent person. I bet you can guess this one, she liked the one that allows her to learn on her own but stayed with her during the process of her learning to support her. He might not know what she was doing but he was always supportive. Before this she was in a relationship that I thought could be genuinely serious. However, I was surprised of the relationship. I had known her boyfriend prior to their relationship and after a few conversations I had assumed that he wasn’t one to settle down early. Either way, they looked really cute together, she seemed to like him. It also helped that he was  older (may or may not translate to maturity). She said that she could consider marriage with him. So as we were talking about this, I thought about who I would like to be my future husband. A little background about me is that I’m an oldest sister and I’ve played the older sister for as long as I can remember. I already have that responsibility mindset (not that I’m a responsible person) I like to think that I can do things on my own. Little things like bills, basic car features, plumbing, putting together furniture, I can definitely do on my own. So when I think about a future husband, I would want him to be supportive of my decisions, I want him to be as ambitious as I am, he has to be able to keep up with me (physically and mentally), he has to be independent (financially, physically, and mentally), he has to be able to reach and lift things that I cannot, he has to be a loose definition of a man (knows how to spoil his lady once in a while, mow the lawn) and last but not least we have to be able to learn from each other. That’s my perfect guy. It seems like I gave 2 examples of a perfect guy from 2 girls. Good enough sample size right? Anyway, good luck to you all in finding that future husband/wife. It’s not easy, if you think you’ve found that person, grab on tight and don’t let go. Life moves way too quickly to let go of the person you love the most.
